Permaglass Laminated Composite Materials

Permali Gloucester Ltd. manufacture a range of thermoset GRP laminates using either epoxy resins for high strength and good electrical insulation properties, or phenolic resins for excellent fire properties including low smoke and toxic fume emissions. The glass-fibre reinforcement can utilise woven, unidirectional or tissue glass to give the final laminate the desired properties.

Laminates such as the Permaglass range of cargo liners for aircraft, or the Permaglass MFM1 decorative laminate have exceptional resistance to fire. The use of a modified phenolic resin provides inherent self-extinguishing properties without the use of halogenated flame-retardant additives, so giving very low smoke and toxic fume emissions and low heat release. Ballistic grades of phenolic laminate are available for bullet and blast resistant armour applications. Other grades are optimised for low thermal conductivity or high abrasion resistance.

Other Permaglass laminates use epoxy resins for their superior electrical properties. The Permaglass 22FE range provide high strength laminates with excellent insulating properties, whilst the Permaglass MER range are modified, fire retardant epoxy grades with high surface tracking resistance and low smoke and toxic fume emissions as required for underground rail systems.

Permaglass Grade Construction Application
FE Woven glass/epoxy High strength, excellent electrical insulating properties.
MER Non-woven glass/epoxy Low smoke, flame retardant electrical laminate with high insulation strength and arc resistance. Supplied to the rail industry.
WF or FF Woven glass/phenolic High strength and fire resistant, with low smoke and toxic fume emissions. Supplied for aircraft and naval applications.
CF Woven glass/phenolic High impact, ballistic grade for vehicle armour.
MF Non-woven glass/phenolic Excellent fire and abrasion resistance. Also low thermal conductivity for cryogenic supports.

XF

Unidirectional glass/phenolic

High strength, fire resistant ballistic grade.  Low smoke emission and low heat release.

AF

Aramid/phenolic

Lightweight ballistic grade.

Permali Gloucester Ltd. can manufacture laminates up to 4.8 x 1.9 metres (15 x 6 feet) and in thicknesses from 0.25 up to 100 mm (0.01 to 4 inches) thick.
